What Is Internal Medicine?
Internal Medicine is the specialty of medicine concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and management of chronic diseases in non-pregnant persons age 18 or greater. Internal Medicine Doctors (or Internists) are sometimes referred to as “experts in complexity”. Internists go through rigorous training in multiple sub-specialties of Medicine including Cardiology, Nephrology, Gastroenterology, Endocrinology, Pulmonology, Critical Care, Rheumatology, and Hospitalist Medicine. Internists will often work in hospitals, or as Primary Care Providers.
Who should see an Internal Medicine Doctor?
Anyone over the age of 18 should have a good Internist. It is always a good idea to have your own Internal Medicine doctor for yearly check-ups, but also for acute illness and management of any chronic issues.
